Gus: unwitting story hero
Alicia-Gus’s love
initially reluctant on and off again love interest who falls deeply in love
with Gus and marries Gus and then has a child with near the end of the
story.
D (Don)-Tom
Hanks-Long-time train rider and long-term traveler who befriends Gus and
protects him along his long and spontaneous journey and later on is outed as an
under-cover DEA agent trying to stop a large shipment of drugs via train.
Terry-Drug
Smuggler
Jessie-Hillbilly
train rider caught up in drug smuggling and Terry’s not-so-smart employee.
Gus gets on a train spontaneously, and ends up as a missing
person along his journey.
Gus makes lots of friends and hears a lot of stories about
other people’s lives and families. Gus finds out that he has been all over the
news and that there is a nation-wide search for Gus when he sees a newscast
with his picture as a missing person.
Gus stops off at the first town out of state and buys some
food, takes a shower and does some laundry at a truck stop nearby the railroad
tracks. He also buys a lottery ticket and then gets back on the train.
